The 2024 Scholarship Application period has closed.
For the class of 2025, we will offer a variety scholarships to young women seniors from Hood County Area High School.
The scholarships are in memory of Glenda Pirkle and Glenda Vernon, two past presidents of TDW who were ardent supporters of assisting young women who plan to pursue higher education.
Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited four year college or university, or a two year college with plans to continue their education at a four year college or university.
Applicants must complete an introduction and a response to a prompt. The introduction must be 100 words introducing yourself, giving your high school achievements, plans for college, and plans for future career. Students will use their counselor’s office form for the introduction. “Why I Support Democratic Values” is the prompt and the response requires a minimum of one well-developed paragraph.
High School applicants should submit the application to the Counselors’ Office by March 21, 2025.
Juneteenth Essay Contest
Our third annual Juneteenth Essay Contest in partnership with the Hood County News was held again this year. The purpose of this contest is to involve middle school and high school students in a significant discussion of the meaning of Juneteenth and the meaning of freedom to all citizens of the United States of America.
Juneteenth is a Federal holiday commemorating the official end of slavery in the state of Texas and is celebrated June 19 of each year. All people should observe Juneteenth. In the words of Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth, “None of us are free until we’re all free.”
