Glenda Pirkle and Glenda Vernon Memorial Scholarships for Young Women

For the class of 2023, we will offer a variety scholarships to young women seniors from Granbury High School.

The scholarships are in memory of Glenda Pirkle and Glenda Vernon, two past presidents of TDW who were ardent supporters of assisting young women who plan to pursue higher education.

Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited four year college or university, or a two year college with plans to continue their education at a four year college or university.

Applicants must complete an introduction and a response to a prompt. The introduction must be 100 words introducing yourself, giving your high school achievements, plans for college, and plans for future career. GHS students will use their counselor's office form for the introduction. "Why I Support Democratic Values" is the prompt and the response requires a minimum of one well developed paragraph.

Granbury High School submit application to the GHS Counselors Office by March 23, 2023.

Juneteenth Essay Contest

Our second annual Juneteenth Essay Contest will be held again this year and is partner sponsored with Hood County News.

Juneteenth is a Federal holiday commemorating the official end of slavery in the state of Texas and is celebrated June 19 of each year. All people should observe Juneteenth. In the words of Opal Lee, the grandmother of Juneteenth, “None of us are free until we're all free.”

The purpose of this contest is to involve students in a significant discussion of the meaning of Juneteenth and the meaning of freedom to all citizens of the United States of America.

Students in middle school and high school are eligible. The maximum words for middle schoolers is 350 and for high schoolers is 500.

The topic this year is "What Juneteenth Means to All Americans"

Deadline has been extended to May 15, 2023. Submit the application and essay to the following email address: sam@hcnews.com 

Cash prizes will be given as follows:

High School: $100 First Place, $75 Second Place and $50 Third Place
Middle School: $75 First Place, $50 Second Place, and $25 Third Place
